Anastasia Petrovic (she/her) is a Serbian-Canadian artist currently living and working from Hamilton, Ontario. Her work researches and connects with themes of culture, identity, morality and ancestry by drawing on inspiration from the rich traditions and legends of Serbian folklore and myth. In addition, her work often attempts to critically reflect on the unsettling implications that these traditions entail. Anastasia creates installations and environments that typically foster painting and textile work as a way of reflecting on these themes. Her work can be recognized by the common use of rich tones and intricate cultural motifs, constructing her artwork in a way that transports and resonates with the viewer. She strives to explore deeper human emotions and experiences, reflecting on them throughout her practice. Anastasia holds her BFA from McMaster University with a minor in Philosophy with plans to pursue further education.

I think of my art as a looking glass that functions as an introspective reflection of the relationship between culture, the individual, and their identity. In my experience, the relationship one has with their culture is multi-faceted and often complicated. In order to try and reconcile the bridge between pride and comfort, and indignation and discomfort, I research Slavic cultural stories, clothing, dance and tradition as a tool to express and contemplate these ideas. Often, my practice will involve engaging with the community around me to learn and unlearn the strange implications that Serbian cultural traditions have had on myself or those around me.
